We consider the dynamics of a finitely generated group G acting by C^1 diffeomorphisms on the circle. We introduce the infinitesimally expansive set for the action, and show how its properties are used to study the dynamics of such an action, especially when restricted to an exceptional minimal set. Several open problems about exceptional minimal sets will also be discussed.
