When a plane shock hits a wedge, a reflection-diffraction process results in a self-similar shock reflection pattern. In this talk we discuss our work, joint with G.-Q. Chen, on existence of global solutions to shock reflection problem for potential flow. We obtain global solutions by reducing the problem to a free boundary problem for a nonlinear degenerate elliptic equation. We also study regularity of the solution near the sonic line, where ellipticity becomes degenerate.
