Abstract:

The rich theories of analysis and integration possessed by p-adic fields and adele rings of number fields are essential tools in modern arithmetic geometry and the Langlands programme, without which many basic notions could not even be defined. Two-dimensional adelic analysis is a relatively new area of research which aims to extend this analytic theory to dimension two, namely to two-dimensional local fields and the adelic rings of two-dimensional schemes, for the purpose of studying the arithmetic of elliptic curves over number fields. I will give an introductory survey of the subject.
