Abstract:

An old question of Serre (which was also raised in Deligne's Weil II) asks whether the odd-degree $\ell$-adic Betti numbers of any proper smooth variety over a field are even. I will give an answer (in the affirmative) to this question and then discuss later questions of Serre and Katz that generalize and refine it.
