Abstract:

The study of lattices in locally compact groups is classical, motivated by Geometry and Number theory. In fact, virtually all our examples of lattices come from these two sources! It seems that most countable group are not lattices in locally compact groups, and most locally compact groups do not envelope any lattice. Moreover, being a lattice in an enveloping group form a strong bonding between the two. A good illustration of such a bonding is the relation between surface groups and SL_2(R). In my talk I will discuss this circle of ideas and some new results, based on recent joint works with Furman-Sauer and Caprace-Gelander-Mozes.
