Abstract:

The Cremona group is the group of all birational transformations of the plane. Its dimension is infinite, and it contains elements with interesting dynamics, for example Henon mappings. I shall describe recent results that describe the algebraic properties of this group. The proofs make use of basic algebraic geometry, dynamical systems, and geometric group theory.
