Abstract:

Understanding orbit closures in dynamical systems is a fundamental question; in general one can only give information about the behavior of a "typical" orbit and not about that of every orbit. However, there are rather nontrivial dynamical systems, where extra (algebraic or geometric) structure of the system allows one to "classify" all orbit closures. Two important examples are unipotent flows on homogeneous spaces and the action of SL(2, R) on the moduli space of a compact Riemann surface. In this talk we will highlight some of the main ideas involved in proving such rigidity results and discuss some applications.
