Abstract:

I will describe a number of basic results on holomorphic one-forms on complex manifolds, ranging from a characterization of tori, to numerical inequalities, and to the existence of zeros. These results have only recently come to light due to progress in an area of algebraic geometry called generic vanishing theory, and partly due to the use of modern Hodge and D-module theory (I will however not insist very much on this last part).
