Abstract:

The Mandelbrot set is one of the most famous objects in modern mathematics. While many of us have seen computer images of this beautiful fractal, few are aware of the active and central research surrounding it. I will present the origins of the Mandelbrot set, mention some recent results, and describe some aspects that remain shrouded in mystery.
