Abstract:

I will discuss two questions about families of K3 surfaces that have their origin in the theory of translation surfaces. The first is concerned with a family of K3s over a hyperbolic Riemann surface. Their cohomology groups form a local system and I will describe a formula for its top Lyapunov exponent. This will be analogous to the Eskin-Kontsevich-Zorich formula in the case of translation surfaces. The second question will concern an analogue for K3s of counting cylinders on a translation surface. I will provide the necessary background from dynamics and from the theory of K3 surfaces.
