I will discuss joint work with Ben Williams which aims at understanding division algebras over fields via techniques from algebraic topology. Of particular importance are the classifying spaces of the projective unitary group, integral representations of the symmetric group, cobordism, and the algebraic construction of classifying spaces of Totaro.
