I will discuss a sensible notion of contractibility for algebraic varieties through explicit examples and introduce a method to prove contractibility results. Time permitting, I will sketch a recent proof that an "amalgamated" version of configuration spaces is contractible. All the necessary background in topology and algebraic geometry will be introduced.
