For meromorphic functions f, Nevanlinna theory is concerned with the distribution of solutions to the equation f(z) = a, as a varies. In 1984, T.K. Carne realized we could interpret the fundamental quantities of Nevanlinna theory in terms of properties about complex Brownian motion, thus allowing us (at least in principle) to use probability to tackle problems in Nevanlinna theory. The aim of this talk will be to provide a ‘proof of concept’ of this philosophy by introducing and proving Nevanlinna’s first theorem using probabilistic methods.Date: Tuesday, November 10, 2015
