Abstract:

I will discuss different points of view on invariants of singularities of algebraic varieties, connections between them, and applications.

Lecture 1: A fundamental invariant in characteristic 0 is the complex integrability exponent: this can be defined in terms of integrability conditions, but it admits several other interpretations. In positive characteristic, a different invariant can be defined by making use of the Frobenius map. It is more elementary to define, but it encodes subtle arithmetic information. I will discuss results and conjectures relating the two invariants.
