Abstract:
The character variety from a finitely generated group to a reductive complex algebraic group G is the set of conjugacy classes of completely reducible representations from this group to G. This variety may have algebraic singularities. When the finitely generated group is a free group or a surface group, these singularities can arise only at non-irreducible representations and irreducible representations with a non-trivial centralizers. The second kind can be viewed as an orbifold-like singularity. We are going to discuss the coincidence between algebraic singularities and orbifold singularities when G=PGL_p with p a prime number.Date: Thursday, January 19, 2017
