Abstract:

Given a dynamical system and a matrix-valued function, one can multiply the matrices along the orbit. For the resulting product matrix, the asymptotic behavior of eigenvalues is governed by the Lyapunov exponents. Although difficult to compute, in certain geometric situations (coming from families of algebraic varieties) there are some formulas for computing, or at least estimating from below the Lyapunov exponents. I will explain the mechanism behind this, as well as some applications of these dynamical ideas to algebraic geometry.
