Abstract:

Not content with ordinary cohomology and K-theory, modern homotopy theory likes to build designer cohomology theories geared at solving specific topological or geometric problems. We'll construct cohomology theories based on elliptic curves, assemble them into the spectrum of topological modular forms, and discover some of the uses of this strange new friend.
