Abstract:

Microlocal analysis applies classical/quantum(wave) correspondence to the study of partial differential equations. The basic concept is that of propagation: trajectories of classical particles describe singularities/energy concentration of solutions of PDE. After a brief general description I will give some applications to quantum chaos and to optimal energy decay outside convex bodies: in both cases we use dynamical tools to make conclusions about waves. The notion of propagation is formalized using the concept of the wave front set which is also useful in understanding functorial operations on distributions. They will be of key importance in the next lecture.
