Abstract:

Congressional redistricting is a partition problem for discrete metric spaces, subject to a large number of legal and political constraints. I'll discuss some approaches to redistricting that are inspired by metric geometry of groups and surfaces, and I'll indicate how they work in practice... and even some interesting theoretical math that flows back out of the gerrymandering application.
