Abstract:

This is a warm-up to my main talk after happy hour on Bhatt-Morrow-Scholze's approach to p-adic Hodge Theory.

The question at heart of their program asks: what is "the" cohomology of an algebraic variety? In the GSS I will motivate this question by discussing Denninger-Hesselholt's approach to the Riemann hypothesis and introducing three flavors of cohomology: motivic, derahm and etale. Comparisons with the analytic situation will be emphasized throughout.
