Abstract:

Studying dynamics of the gradient flow for functions of many variables which are far from being convex is extremely difficult. I will talk about a special case of this sort of problem, where the function is the spherical (pure) p-spin Hamiltonian. After reviewing foundational results regarding the landscape of such functions, I will discuss some observed properties of gradient flows in this setting and outline a possible approach for understanding things better.
