Brief Description:
Special Note: Impromptu Graduate Student Workshop in Symplectic Topology
Abstract:

An open book decomposition of a manifold M consists of a codimension two binding B and a fibration of the complement of B over the unit circle, each fiber called a page. Open book decompositions are intimately tied up with contact geometry, exemplified in three dimensions in particular by the Giroux correspondence. We will discuss how contact geometry and open books interact and recast aspects of the theory into contact handle decompositions.
