I will introduce the dHYM equation, relate it with the Kempf-Ness function, and prove some necessary algebraic conditions for the existence of a solution on Kahler manifolds. The talk is based on the paper "Stability and the deformed Hermitian-Yang-Mills equation" by Collins-Shi.
