The probabilistic approach to study subgroups of locally compact groups, and in particular semisimple Lie groups and locally symmetric spaces has proven very successful during the last decade. In this talk I will discuss the notions of invariant random subgroups (IRS) and stationary random subgroups (SRS). I will explain some basic properties, review some of the main results concerning locally symmetric spaces (obtained using IRS and SRS) and state some main open problems.
