Abstract:
This will be a brief survey of some of the recent applications of chaos theory to non-equilibrium statistical mechanics. We show how transport coefficients for fluid systems can be expressed in terms of Lyapunov exponents and Kolmogorov-Sinai entropies, and how these latter quantities are defined and calculated for simple systems. The role of chaos theory for understanding irreversible entropy production will also be discussed, time permitting.Date: Tuesday , March 11, 1997
