Abstract:

It is generally accepted that planetary magnetic fields are induced by mechanical motion in the planets' interior. Systems transferring mechanical into electromagnetic energy are called dynamos. They are technically realized in electrical generators utilizing ferromagnetic materials. In the lecture the interior constitution of planets and the internal convection pattern are outlined. A model flow (after Roberts & Busse) is then suggested resembling the flow pattern in the planets' interior. Based on this flow a model for a kinematic dynamo is outlined and the design of an experimental facility to demonstrate the dynamo effect is described. The current state of construction work for this experiment is presented.
