Abstract:

I give a brief summary of some of our new results in improving Gutzwiller's periodic orbit theory. We go beyond semiclassical theory and compute systematic $\hbar$ corrections to leading order semiclassics. We also take into account diffractive effects via constructing a diffractive trace formula based on J. B. Keller's geometric theory of diffraction. We test these new improved formulas on the two and three disc scattering systems. Finally we study the effect of diffractive periodic orbits on the transport properties of clean mesoscopic wires with a low number of impurities.
