Abstract:
Propagation of light beams in nonlinear optical media leads to a range of spatial phenomena including transverse instabilities, soliton dynamics, and pattern formation. Recent theoretical and experimental results obtained in photorefractive media demonstrate the evolution from spatial disorder to quasi-periodic and periodic patterns, and their control. Ongoing work aimed at observing related effects in other systems, including optical parametric oscillators and nonlinear atom-optical interactions, will be described.Date: Tuesday, October 21, 1997
