Abstract:
Date: Friday, November 14, 1997Analysis of pulse propagation in nonlinear optical fibers with periodically-spaced phase-sensitive amplifiers (PSAs) shows that the averaged pulse evolution is governed by a fourth-order nonlinear diffusion equation similar to the Kuramoto-Sivashinsky and Swift-Hohenburg equations. The behavior of pulse solutions of this equation will be summarized, and in particular the intrinsic stabilizing effects of PSAs will be highlighted. In addition, the modeling of some recent PSA-based experiments will also be discussed.
