Abstract:
We discuss a rather general theorem which says that linear instability of an evolution PDE, implies nonlinear instability. We consider this theorem in the context of the Euler equations for the motion of an ideal fluid. Application of the theorem requires fairly detailed information about the structure of the spectrum of the linearised Euler equation. We discuss the spectra for some particular examples and prove that these flows are nonlinearly unstable. This work is joint with Misha Vishik.Date: Friday, May 22, 1998
