Abstract:

We will consider two different problems which lead to equations in linear groups. One is the Ore conjecture: every element in a finite non-cyclic simple group G is a (single) commutator.

The second is the problem of characterizing finite solvable groups by finding a sequence of formulas e_n(x,y) such that a finite group G is solvable if and only if e_n(x,y) is an identity in G for some n.
