Abstract:

Thanks to recent advances in physics and chemistry it is now possible to image, manipulate and study single molecules. These new techniques are being used to investigate a diverse set of scientific problems, ranging from fundamental questions about the behavior of polymers to the development of sensitive new tools for nanofabrication and biological analysis. I will survey some projects in my group which demonstrate the power of single molecule science, ranging from single molecule force spectroscopy with femtoNewton resolution to the fabrication of nanometer scale optical devices.
