Abstract:

A basic problem in oceanography, and other branches of science is to determine transport properties of stochastic flows as well as flows determined by random velocity fields. (A stochastic flow is a model for an ensemble of points undergoing diffusion.) For example, it was considered a major problem to determine how fast an oil slick would spread out under either of the above transport methods. We'll discuss our recent results on the rate at which a body of passive tracers, such as oil molecules, spread under certain flows. We'll also discuss the distortion properties of boundaries of regions of particles transported by flows.
