Abstract:

Jamming occurs in a wide variety of situations. Normally one thinks of traffic jams on a highway or the jamming that occurs when solid particles become impacted on leaving an orifice. I will argue that the transition from a flowing to a jammed state may be similar in many respects to other situations as well. The case I have in mind is the glass transition where a liquid becomes progressively sluggish as the temperature is lowered until it eventually becomes a glass where it stops moving entirely.
