Abstract:

The local Langlands conjecture predicts the structure of representations of an algebraic group over a local field. This theory interacts in intricate ways with the representation theory of certain nonalgebraic covering groups which, by definition, lie outside the Langlands formalism. The most famous example is the metaplectic group and its role in the construction of theta series. In any event, it's a natural problem to develop a Langlands formalism for covering groups. The purpose of this talk is introduce some geometric ideas that (in favorable cases) make this possible over R. This gives new character liftings.
