2nd Northwestern Summer School in Probability
SNAP 2018
Northwestern University
July 16th-July 26th, 2018
The 2nd Northwestern Summer School in Probability is a two-week summer school in Probability to be held at Northwestern University, as part of the activities of the NSF RTG grant "Analysis on Manifolds" and NSF Career grant DMS 1653552.
It will feature mini-courses of increasing level of specialization, aimed at undergraduate and graduate students and recent PhDs, in various topics in probability. It is part of the 2018 Summer Northwestern Analysis Program (SNAP).
Date, Time and Location
The 2nd Northwestern Summer School in Probability will be held at the Department of Mathematics of Northwestern University from Monday, July 16, 2018 to Thursday, July 26, 2018. The lectures will take place at Lunt Hall, Room 105.
Undergraduate and graduate students, fresh Ph.D.s and under-represented minorities are
especially encouraged to participate. Partial financial support is available for US citizens and permanent residents.
The Summer Program is supported by the
Mathematics Department at Northwestern University, by the NSF RTG grant "Analysis on Manifolds" and by the NSF Career grant DMS 1653552.
Program Outline
Introductory mini-courses - Probability Bootcamp
There will be two introductory mini-courses in
probability aimed principally at graduating seniors who will enter a PhD
program in the mathematical sciences in the Fall. However, all
undergraduate math majors and beginning graduate students in mathematics
are welcome. Problem solving will be a major part of this week's
activities. It is expected that students have completed a basic first
course in analysis (at the level of, for example, Rudin's Principles of
Mathematical Analysis) and some background in basic probability. Some familiarity with Lebesgue integration is recommended. The mini-course speakers are:
- Elena Kosygina and Ivan Matic   (CUNY - Baruch College) -- Large deviations through examples.
- Steve Lalley   (University of Chicago) -- Random Walks on Infinite Discrete Groups.
A special colloquium lecture will be given by Steve Zelditch (Northwestern).
Advanced mini-courses
These courses are aimed at mathematics PhD
students who are interested in or actively carrying out research in Probability.
Postdoctoral scholars are also welcome to apply to this week of the program.
The mini-course speakers are:
- Yuri Bakhtin   (Courant Institute) -- Ergodic theory of the stochastic Burgers equation.
- Vadim Gorin   (MIT) -- Tilings, matrices, and representations through Schur generating functions.
- Jeremy Quastel   (University of Toronto) -- TASEP and the KPZ fixed point.
Registration
All participants must register online, even those who are
not applying for funding. If demand exceeds the number of available spots,
priority will be given to those who register before March 1, 2018.
The
electronic registration form
is available here.
Financial Support
The Summer Program is supported by the
Mathematics Department at Northwestern University, by the NSF RTG grant "Analysis on Manifolds"
and by the NSF Career grant DMS 1653552.
Partial financial support is available for
undergraduates, graduate students and recent PhDs. Women mathematicians and members of other under-represented groups are especially encouraged to apply for support.
People interested in applying for travel funds should indicate so
in the electronic registration form. Priority will be
given to those who send their
request for support before March 1, 2018.
